Honor this spooky season with Steve Parmelee and learn the secrets and his process of assemblage art - sculptures using found objects from a bygone era. This October afternoon will include insight into the collecting of items like tools, instruments and toys, and the curation of the pieces, and then a demonstration of how the artwork is put together. Bites and beverages will also be on hand.
"Much of my found material comes from estate sales, where I often make acquaintances with the deceased who can only speak to me through the keepsakes in junk drawers and cellars. Estate sales can be a spiritual place, as well as a treasure trove of everyday relics, and often time capsules of a bygone era. I started seeing the sacred in the discarded, and felt compelled to find an after-life for what might seem completely worn-out. I draw my inspiration from the patinas that build up on everyday utensils, the wear and erosion that affect tools, and the way an object is marked by the ages. I feel a generational connection with these objects handled by unknown past lives. A tactile wisdom radiates from worn patinas. These haunted artifacts can strike an individual, or even collective, memory."

Making Connections
What makes Steve Parmelee's work extraordinary is his ability to tell stories through his work. When you view his work, you realize it's saying something very special. Sometimes it can be open to interpretation, but the story is front and center. The power of the work is at the intersection of the stories of the individual objects, that when brought together, tell a whole new narrative.
