This two-day immersion will guide participants in the creation of their own uniquely expressive paper mache and mixed media masks. Participants will examine the contradictions and contrasts in materials, textures, colors, and expressions. Mask making is present in every culture throughout history and represents both our connections and differences to the human experience throughout the ages.
What to expect from your workshop with Mariah Ordonez
This course will begin with an examination of masks from varied cultures and time periods and provide prompts inviting students to reflect on their own identities, inspirations, egos, and points of power. Next, we will create varied 3-dimensional forms using found and recycled objects to be used as a base for our masks. We will layer them in paper mache. The following day creative work will center on surface decoration. We will add layers of paint, textures, texts, and other media. At the conclusion of this course, participants will have a completed mask to take home.
