Sketching on Location

For me, sketching on location is the most effective technique for collecting visual information about a specific location. I keep my materials simple; a pencil for planning, a pen for definitive line work, and watercolor for recording the colors of my experience.

There is no denying how taking photographs can be helpful for reference in our paintings, however it is the creating in the moment part of the process that helps artists truly capture a sense of place and communicate that with our audience.
What to expect from your Sketch Port Gamble Workshop
Students will meet between 9:30 and 10 in Port Gamble at a designated location. At 10:00am Derek will demonstrate drawing & painting techniques at a location to be determined in Port Gamble. By approximately 11:00am students are free to explore and seek out desirable compositions to capture. Derek will make his way around to assist and offer suggestions as students begin.

There are some great places for lunch in Port Gamble - students may break for that as they choose, or bring lunch in a cooler. After lunch, students may return to their first scene to complete a sketch, or seek out an additional painting based on how the process is going. Toward the end of the class, students will gather for a fun discussion & critique.
Students are encouraged to bring a 9x12 mixed media paper sketchbook. Scroll down to see what Derek uses for supplies. Beyond that students should bring drawing tools that they are comfortable with. Derek will provide for each student a loaded travel watercolor palette filled with vibrant colors by PNW manufacturer M. Graham & Co and a Pentel Finito Pen. Bring one or two simple brushes that will enable you to paint larger areas efficiently or simplified detail.
What you should bring

9x12 Mixed Media (or watercolor) Sketchbook
-
Travel Brush - or simple brushes that travel easily and can be simply protected as you move from location to location.
-
Drawing Pencil for sketching - traditional or mechanical
-
Portable Stool (although I often stand or find a place to sit like a picnic table, rock, etc
-
Hat, Sunblock (as needed depending on weather)
What's Included (FREE with your workshop)
An assortment of M. Graham Watercolors loaded into a portable folding palette - a few spots left empty for you to grow into other colors you might also like.
Pentel Finito Pen - on mixed media or watercolor paper the pigment can be loosened up and spread in a light wash immediately after application. Longer setting time dries more permanently. Lightfast rating is very good.
