What to expect from your 2 day Printmaking Experience
Now that you have learned the basics of linocut printmaking it’s time to dive into some new techniques! With this two-day class you will have more time to hone your skills and try out some new techniques. Let’s have some FUN!

The below techniques will be reviewed and demonstrated.

Participants will choose which listed techniques they would like to explore during this session.

Techniques will include:

Jigsaw printmaking:
-
Using one linoleum block to create multi-color prints by cutting the block into
sections, inking each section individually, and then piecing them back together to
run through the press.

Multiblock printmaking:
-
Using more than one linoleum block to create multi-layer prints.

Registration techniques:
-
Learning how to make sure your blocks and paper line up perfectly!
-
We will talk about several techniques and use Ternes-Burton pins for registration.

Chine-Collé:
-
Incorporating thin papers between the block and the paper to selectively include
color and texture. Thin paper is adhered to the backing paper in printing.

Selective inking techniques:
-
Inking different colors on one block.
-
Rainbow rolls and gradients.

Printing other substrates:
-
T-shirts and Tea-Towels (Bring a pre-washed t-shirt, tea-towels will be provided)
-
Printing on different papers.
We will be carving on unmounted ‘Battleship Gray Linoleum’ printing blocks and some softer materials.
We will be printing on Somerset Satin paper with Cranfield Caligo Safe Wash inks. (and some other papers for variety.)
We will be printing with two types of fabric ink.
All materials will be provided except t-shirts.

Details:
-
Bring your pre-carved blocks! Not mandatory but it would be fun to experiment
with them.
-
Bring some simple designs that you would like to use for this class.
The blocks will be 5x7 and 8x10, so design to fit those sizes or smaller. Search
some examples on Google keywords; “Jigsaw Linocut” “relief printing” “multi-
block printing” “linocut printmaking” for inspiration!

-
Please bring a lunch, snacks, and something to drink.
Notes:
No harsh solvents will be used in this class. The ink cleans up with ‘simple green’ (the
yellow version)
Here's a peek at what went down during Kathy's first linocut workshop at Black Barn Fine Art Studio back in March. If you are registering for this 2 day workshop, please be sure you have taken an "Intro" Class with Kathy, either here at Black Barn or at another facility.
