Enroll in 6 weeks of serious art study in drawing, painting and 3D development as James and Derek guide students in special learning exercises and projects. This is a solid program helpful in developing a strong portfolio, finding your creative voice, and improving your weaknesses while also leaning into your strengths. The curriculum of all 3 courses is designed to help serious art students develop their visual skills.

Summer Masters Academy (3 course package)
Your tuition includes a material fee which covers most materials in your summer study. Some students may wish to purchase additional supplies on their own, but James & Derek will provide high quality supplies for their Summer Masters Academy Students.

Course Descriptions
Drawing - Thursdays 9:00am -12:00pm - James Andrews
​
Students will learn classical methods of drawing through special exercises used my master artists for centuries. The methods will help individuals understand value, proportion, form, and light and shadow. Bargue plates will be used as well as other master copy techniques. Students will also draw from plaster casts on hand at Black Barn. Students will arrange and develop successful still life drawings, and also get an opportunity to draw from a model at some point during the program. Learning objectives will help all students develop drawing and visual skill as well as solid portfolio pieces to demonstrate their skill level.

Sculpture - Thursdays 1:00pm - 4:00pm - James Andrews
​
Students will develop hands on visual skill for building 3D forms with various types of clay. Working with armatures, students will how to develop support systems for more elaborate sculptures. Master copies will be produced in clay, as well as a self portrait head sculpture - Black Barn will be installing a kiln so that some student clay work can fired after proper drying times. Students may have to return after the 6 week program to retrieve fired work - as it must dry thoroughly before firing. This will be arranged as the class draws to a close, but is likely to be a few week after the program concludes.

Painting - Fridays 9:00am -12:00pm - Derek Gundy

Students will produce studies and paintings in acrylic paint - learning how to utilize value, color, shape, and composition resulting in successful paintings. Monochromatic paintings will teach students the strength of values in painting. Color mixing and creating color temperature charts will help students get familiar with the paint medium and enable them to be in better control of their painting skills.

Monitored Studio - Fridays 1:00pm - 4:00pm
​
Students enrolled in any of the above programs may attend monitored studio time between 1 and 4 on Fridays to continue artwork and to get additional feedback and guidance.
